Who are you?

The Consorzio per l’AREA di Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica di Trieste, briefly AREA, manages, supports and promotes AREA Science Park, the leading science and technology park in Italy with multidisciplinary features and facilities located in Trieste and Gorizia, providing world-class infrastructures and equipment. It draws together facilities and skills to work on behalf of the competitiveness of the private sector, the promotion of research results, local innovation as well as on business development and internationalization. With 88 resident organizations – R&D centres and knowledge intensive companies – and a staff of 2400, AREA Science Park is a resource for small, medium, and large enterprises, research centres, startups, public administrations, and the region as a whole.
AREA plays the role of a regional hub for innovation, where top training, research and enterprises meet and become a key resource for the growth of the territorial economy and employment opportunities. Over the years, it has actively contributed to the enhancement of the territory attractiveness and competitiveness through technology transfer, innovation management and energy efficiency related projects. So far, AREA has managed and cooperated in several national and international projects targeting innovation and the energy sector (ENERPLAN (www, IUSES (, PATRES (, PINE (, BUMP(), ADRIACOLD, TESSI (, MARIE (, that have further increased and widened AREA’s specific competences in the folders.

Why join the MARIE project?

AREA considers a strategic priority the participation in the MARIE project because it is full in line with AREA core activities and mission in order to achieve the following objectives:
•To increase the knowledge application capacity in energy efficiency of the regional main actors related to the Mediterranean Building Stock: tenants, owners, promoters, SMEs, research centers and policy makers;
•To identify, compare, test and support technical solutions in order to improve the energy efficiency of existing and new Mediterranean buildings;
•To intensify transfer of specific know-how, methods and practices in improving energy efficiency in buildings among involved regions and bodies;
•To make operative common assessment, implementation tools and common decisions making in order to increase the governance capacity regarding energy conservation in buildings;
•Elaborating and implementing pilot projects and demonstration plants which may simultaneously become laboratories of technological development and industrial experiments where universities, schools, research bodies, companies and public administrators can learn and compare technical, environmental and economic results of various solutions in a Mediterranean context.

What is your role in the project?

AREA Science Park, as experienced organization in promotion and awareness activities, training, networking, coordination of national and international research and industrial innovation projects on energy efficiency and development of renewable energy systems for buildings, acts as technical partner in WP3 and 5:
• With the support of Friuli Venezia Giulia region, setting up the Regional Interest Group (RIG) presenting suggestions and proposals for the regulation, discipline, and incentive of energy retrofits, on the basis of the actual needs of the region’s citizens and professionals in the energy sector. The goal is to define the guidelines that will become the basis for the Regional Administration’s norms and policies in the field of energy efficiency, and which will take into account the suggestions and proposals of all the relevant local stakeholders through a bottom-up approach;
• Identifying, comparing and testing the best technology products for energy efficiency of buildings, considering the peculiarities of the Mediterranean context. AREA will study and test in real condition of work two innovative products, namely: Energy simulation model and parametric analysis of a micro cogeneration system based on innovative type of fuel cells which able to operate in different type of fuels such as natural gas, LPG and also with biogas; forecasting service of a public building energy improvement through simulation and optimisation dynamic tool;
• Contributing to the strategic research lines relevant for the future programme period 2014 – 2020 specifically for Integrated Energy Design tools and Energy management lines.
